HELLO, good evening and welcome to issue 48 of Octopus's Garden, the subzeen with its very own summer solstice special issue. An html version of this subzeen is available on the Web at http://www.manorcon.demon.co.uk/octopus/index.html. It's also sent to the TAP mailing list, which you can join automatically by sending the message 'subscribe tap' to majordomo@diplom.org. The message 'unsubscribe tap' sent to the same address will get you off the mailing list.

Round 9 -- "William Rufus de Vane King" -- RR 1701 TT

Railway Rivals Map TT (Leapfrog)

CORRECTIONS/COMMENTS TO ROUND 8: One player queried PEAT's payment to TURN at H56 in last time's builds, as PEAT already has a junction at H56. I am using what I believe to be the standard David Watts ruling that if you build into a junction where you already have a connection, you do pay again. (You can, of course, avoid this by building out of the junction instead of in to it.) However, I did spot another error in the builds ; TURN's (F58) - D69 should have been (F68) - D69. No-one appears to have been fooled.

Note the change of e-mail address for Richard Weiss. For Round 10, you may enter up to 4 races and build up to 8 physical points of track (i.e. payments to rivals do not count against the limit, although of course you still pay them.) Please specify known payments to others in both races and builds! Could you all let me have Round Ten orders by FRIDAY, 21st JULY, 2000 to Peter Sullivan, octopus@manorcon.demon.co.uk

Races for Round Ten :

PRESS:

GOOCH : Per the comments in the press, Doug Brown has dropped out of the retirement business and is once again playing on a limited basis - two games (one RR, one BB) in my 'zine. But he was never out of the gaming world at all, he had just shifted focus - he has all along been massively involved in those fantasy sports leagues that interest me not at all, but seem to mesmerise him.... Enjoy, and (to quote the Oya) peace & love ("P&L")

PEAT (who is moving like moss, and not Sterling)- Railmaster: How about selecting races that comply with my track builds?

GENEVA: As with most RR gamesmasters, all the races (and all the building rolls for the first six rounds) were pre-generated before the start. How about selecting track builds that comply with my races? (Actually, I believe that someone - probably Dane Maslen, who also invented the "Reduced Randomness" Railway Rivals variant - has suggested publishing all the rolls and races before the start, as a sort of "Open Government" variant of Railway Rivals.)

TURN: I have obviously upset Richard in a big way with what I thought was gamesmanship, but was interpreted as unsportsmanlike behaviour. In light of this, I choose to deliberatley NMR for this Round. If this means ejection, I understand.
